Beginners, Don’t Be Scayyerd! January 24, 2009

It’s funny how when I meet people and start talking with them about mountain biking, they usually say something like, “Uh, uh.  That sport is way too hard and too dangerous for me.”

Of course they are wrong.  Fear is a great motivator, sometimes it motivates us to do something, but mostly it paralyzes us and motivates us not to do something.

I ran across this blog today, and I think some of you nay-sayers might find it helpful.

Hey there! I’m an enthusiastic and recent convert to mountain biking. If I’m going through a mid-life crisis, well, I’m enjoying it! It’s a fabulous sport to get into in New Zealand – we have all the resources: good weather, fabulous and varied countryside.

As far as fear is concerned, I’m a big fan of facing my fear and then running away. As far as I’m concerned, fear is your body’s way of telling you it’s too high/pointy/fast/poisonous/bitchy. At least with mountain biking, you can choose your comfort setting. I don’t do aerial stunts. At least not voluntarily 🙂

You are right, fear can keep you alive. Some fear however is due to ignorance on the subject. Oh, and I saw you do an aerial stunt (though accidental) off a ladder in the video!
